Working at Kanary

The Opportunity

As a founding member of Kanary, you'll have the opportunity to imagine and build products that make a real difference in people's safety, security, and privacy. We need new tools and services to protect ourselves and our loved ones from a rapidly changing landscape of threats online and in the real world. Kanary scans the internet, removes listings, and makes sure personal information stays private. This is just the start. Come help us redefine how websites, companies, and individuals treat your information.

Compensation

Generous, competitive salary and employee-friendly equity in Kanary.

Location

We're remote with a hub in Seattle. Being a remote team has been and will be an advantage as we hire exceptional people and tackle more complex global privacy challenges. We coordinate quarterly trips and recognize the benefit of IRL collaboration.

Team

We are a small, highly cross-functional team. You'll be a core part of shaping our culture and mission. We collaborate, move quickly, try not to break things, and help each other do our best work. We don't take ourselves too seriously and trust each other to manage our time effectively.

Investors

We're venture-backed but currently funded by our customers. Mozilla was our first check, and 2048 Ventures (Alex Iskold) and First Star Ventures (Drew Volpe) are our primary investors. They support our commitment to challenge the status quo, defend privacy, and build a better internet. Our other investors and advisors include mission-aligned leaders from DuckDuckGo, Datadog, and Github.

Our Hiring Process

We start with an intro call and take a look at your past work if you can share it. Then we'll set up a technical discussion so you can get to know how you think about writing code and solving problems. With that background, we'll have you work on a ~2 hour take home project covering your ability to scope and lead a feature discussion. The final step is to debrief what did and didn't go well about the project and answer any remaining questions. From first intro until making a decision, we typically take between one and four weeks to know if it's a good fit. Throughout the process, we want to make sure you can show off your strengths and get to know our team.

Open Roles:

Full Stack Software Engineer

Kanary improves your online safety by controlling who has access to your information.

We’re a team of 5, backed by top VCs like YC and 2048 and privacy leaders like Mozilla, but we’re now funded by our customers.

We launched Kanary in 2019 because the tools we had to protect ourselves from breaches, doxxing, and harassment were not working. With the rise of AI, Kanary’s mission is more important than ever. A member recently wrote to our team,

“I am beyond grateful there is a service like yours. I am sorry for pouring my heart out in an email. I've lived through phases of panic and wish I knew I could have found Kanary sooner.”

We’re looking for a full stack engineer to accelerate new product development and help us grow our impact. You’ll own projects like:

  • Rapid prototyping. Work with our designer to build & launch experiments using python and java script. We use Django and embrace LLMs to improve our engineering speed.

  • Measurement. Work with our founder to ask the right questions about which experiments are working and which are not. Create dashboards using SQL and our product analytics tool PostHog. Help us move our KPIs up & to the right.

We value entrepreneurial energy, product focus, and radical ownership. If you have at least 3 years of experience working on engineering teams or experience launching your own startup, you might be a fit. We scope our work in days, not months. Compensation depends on experience and potential but we aim for $90k-$150k base and generous equity. If this sounds like fun, reach out to our founder, rachel[at]kanary.com.

Backend Engineering Lead

We’re looking for a senior Python or Go engineer with leadership experience and devops interest to help us scale as we respond to rapid customer growth. You’ll own projects like:

  • Performance engineering. Optimize code, database design, and deployment configuration. We use Django.

  • Dev ops. Scale compute and crawler tasks. Help us maintain high speed and quality results for members. Experiment with configuration that evades anti-bot blockers.

  • Product engineering. Experiment with ways to improve how we control information online. Embrace the cat and mouse game of working in an adversarial environment of captchas and rate limits.

We value entrepreneurial energy, product focus, and radical ownership. We scope our work in days, not months. Compensation depends on experience and potential but we aim for $120k-$170k base and generous equity. If this sounds like fun, reach out to our founder, rachel[at]kanary.com.
